GlossaryOn Line Queries
What is an Artificial Insemination?
The Artificial Insemination is a simple technique. It is the process by which the
sperm -previously prepared in the laboratory- is placed into the uterus coinciding
with ovulation. If the sperm used for the insemination belongs to the woman's partner,
this technique is called Homologous Artificial Insemination. However, if the sperm
is from a donor it is called Artificial Insemination by Donor.
When is the Artificial Insemination recommended?
Artificial Insemination is recommended when there are sperm alterations, difficulties
during sexual intercourse (e.g. vaginismus), abnormal cervical mucus, mild endometriosis,
immunological factor with low number of antibodies, ovulation alterations or unexplained
sterility.
What does this technique involve?
The technique consists of three phases:
Ovarian stimulation: It is done to improve the woman's conditions,
and it involves inducing a multiple ovulation through a hormonal treatment controlled
with ultrasound scans.
Sperm selection: It is done in order to improve the conditions
of the sperm by choosing the best spermatozoids.
Insemination: It is carried out by placing the selected spermatozoids
inside the uterus. The spermatozoids are placed near where the fertilization usually
takes place with the aim of achieving the pregnancy.
Is it possible to use sperm from a donor?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the Artificial Insemination?
